Sriyani Arif (née Fernando), who passed away in London in February 2021, was a proud daughter of Sri Lanka. She studied at Ladies College Colombo, then at London University, and completed a management course at the London College of Printing, coming top of the class. She was the first female student to have been admitted there. A wife, mother, grandmother, and successful businesswoman, she was committed to progressive and humanitarian causes, especially the rights of women and girls. She believed passionately in education, equality and opportunity. Although she lived most of her adult life in London, she remained a staunch Sri Lankan patriot.
In Sriyani Arif’s memory, her family are creating four annual memorial scholarships of Rs 125,000 each. These scholarships are to help promising girls from modest backgrounds who have shown potential through success in their school career, display future professional and leadership potential, but face financial difficulties. These scholarships are specifically available for girls pursuing degrees at Sri Lankan colleges and universities.
